Bridal Asia: Honey, Humaima conquer India

One of the largest platforms to provide Indian and Pakistani designers the opportunity to showcase latest trends in bridal fashion, the three-day bridal extravaganza Bridal Asia 2011 was held in new Delhi recently and featured ramp presentations in which seven top Indian designers along with their Pakistani counterpart Honey Waqar unveiled their latest collections.

Credible names in Indian bridal wear such as Sabyasachi, Shantanu & Nikhil and Raghuvendra Rathore showcased their collection on the opening day of the event while a relatively new entry, Siddharth Tytler, joined the lot.

Living up to the expectation one has with the label, Sabayasachi presented a collection that emphasised on bringing out the exuberance in bridals with a blend of classic tradition and rich craftsmanship. Every piece showcased in the collection bore testimony to the rich and complex Indian heritage and culture. The textiles were profoundly inspired by the costumes of Royal India-Mughal Gharana, Avadhi Royalty and the paintings by Raja Ravi Verma. The colour palette was, however, a bit unusual and deviated from the eastern standard.

The designer sent down the ramp outfits that were mainly stitched in a combination of black and white. The majority of the fabrics used in this collection were velvet, georgette, brocade, khadi, silk, net, muslin, chanderi, dhakai and gauze. Although the designer was a little less experimental in terms of silhouettes, still the overall impact of the collection was elegant and sophisticated.

Mix and match of various textiles and embellishments created a much desirable result. The highlight of Sabayasachi’s collection was his immaculate menswear which was both cutting-edge and spoke generously about the designer’s command over the centuries-old traditional cuts and craft. A solid-coloured achkan worn over a bright-hued, flared angarkha and paired with fitted churidars and the right type of turbans brought back the memories of pre-British Raj era when the subcontinent was the hub of opulence and rich tradition.
